It can save time and improve access to information, but it also creates predictable harms: confident wrong answers, privacy exposure, unfair outcomes, and deception through synthetic media. This brief explains how people can use AI more ethically and safely, and it outlines policy options decision-makers can consider to protect privacy, fairness, safety, and public trust.
